Spencer C. Pond: Dancer & Artistic Director of The Now Unboxing Project
New York City, NY
What Moves You?
“There are so many things that make me move! Here are some of my favorites:
You know that song ‘Emotions’ by Mariah Carey? How at about two and half minutes in she starts belting her face off, and then switches into that amazing whistle tone that makes your body sink, and your eyes squint? I love the hits of 808 drums and how a bass can resonate; I crave the feeling of slicing through the air with your arms as you feel gravity pushing down, and your muscles pushing up; the feeling of your arches pushing beyond the comforts of your toes; Pop Art; I love how we are simultaneously the best dancers in the world, and never good enough. I could go on forever, but the shortest version is that moving makes me feel great and helps me make sense of the world.”
Originally from Hartford, CT – Spencer trained as a Jazz Dancer at The Hartt School Community Division under the tutelage of Darlene Zoller, and in Classical Ballet with Samantha Dunster. After dancing with local companies such as stop/time dance theater, Full Force Dance Theatre, and The Sonia Plumb Dance Company, he founded his own company, The Now Unboxing Project in order to pursue his interest in choreography and advancing the art of Concert Jazz Dance.
